本能寺の変
本能寺の変は、1582年6月2日早朝、明智光秀が謀反を起こし、京都本能寺に滞在する主君織田信長を襲撃した事件です。
この謀反は日本史上最後の下剋上といわれています。本能寺で茶会を開こうとした信長は本能寺に火を放ち、49歳の生涯を終えました。
明智光秀はその後6月14日に中国地方から主君の仇討ちの為引き返してきた羽柴秀吉との戦いに敗れ、生涯を終えます。この事件から日本には「三日天下」という言葉があります。
短期間で光秀が亡くなったので、事件を起こした理由は諸説あります。
ただ、2017年に事件を起こした直後に光秀が書いたと思われる手紙が見つかりました。手紙の内容から、光秀は信長によって追放された将軍と通じていたとみられます。
堺にいた徳川家康も狙われましたが伊賀の山中を越え助かりました。
