６月半ば、クルーズ船「ビラ・ビ・オデッセイ」の船内に足を踏み入れたシャロン・レーンさんは、喜びと安堵（あんど）の気持ちで胸がいっぱいで、「長年の夢がついに叶（かな）った」と記者に語った。
米カリフォルニア出身で７７歳のレーンさんは、今後１５年間この居住型クルーズ船で世界の海を巡り、日本からニュージーランドまでさまざまな場所に立ち寄る予定だ。
貯蓄の大半をキャビンの購入に充てたレーンさんだが、「もう自分で洗濯しなくていいし、買い物にも行かなくていい。南カリフォルニアで暮らすよりも、船上生活の方がずっと安く済む」と話す。
