来年で、今世紀の最初の四半世紀が終わることになるが、このタイミングで、カナダの『Le Journal De Quebec』紙は、「21世紀最高のアスリート」をランキング形式で選出した。
このランキングにはあらゆるスポーツ分野の選手たちが含まれているが、1位にはバロンドール8回受賞した現インテル・マイアミのアルゼンチン代表FWリオネル・メッシが輝いた。
2位はNFLスターのトム・ブレイディ、3位は水泳で五輪で28個のメダルを獲得したのマイケル・フェルプスがランクインし、日本からは、野球の大谷翔平が21位にランクインした。
