地球から約49光年の距離に位置する惑星のひとつに、大気が存在する可能性が明らかになり、生命が存在できる惑星の候補もあり得る。
地球の約5倍の質量を持つ「LHS 1140b」と呼ばれるこの惑星は、周回する恒星との距離から、暑すぎず寒すぎないので、水が存在できる範囲内にある。
惑星科学者、コリン・チェラビム氏はまた、この惑星には鉄の核とケイ酸塩鉱物のマントルがあり、水に加えて大気を持つ可能性があることが新たに分かったと報告した。
