米騒動
米騒動とは、1918年に日本で発生した、コメの価格急騰にともなう一連の暴動事件です。
第一次世界大戦の影響による好景気はコメ消費量の増大をもたらし、一方で工業労働者の増加と農村から都市部への人口流出の結果、米の生産量は伸び悩んでいました。大戦の影響で米の輸入量が減少したこともあって1918年の中ごろからコメの価格が上昇し始めました。
米作地主や米取扱業者の売り惜しみや買い占め、米穀投機が発生し始めました。
そのなか寺内正毅内閣は1918年8月、シベリア出兵を宣言しました。この宣言は戦争特需におけるコメの価格高騰を見越した流通業者などの、投機や売り惜しみを加速させました。
米騒動の始まりは1918年8月、富山県のとある村で民衆たちが米を船に積む仕事を拒否し、米の販売を求めて米屋や役所に押しかけた事です。米騒動は2ヶ月間、全国各地で起こり、約70万人もの人々を巻き込む大騒動となりました。
この影響で、寺内正毅が内閣総理大臣を辞職し、原敬が内閣総理大臣となりました。
