海上保安庁の航空機によると硫黄島沖合1キロに直径100メートル程度の新島が噴火によって形成されたと報告された。
東京大の前野深准教授によると島の形状などから、少なくとも2カ所で噴火が起きていた可能性があるという。
前野さんは硫黄島は世界でも最も隆起速度が速い火山の一つで、流出している軽石の量が多いので、近くを航行する船は注意が必要だと話した。
