彼は前日の取組で右の足首を痛めたが、兄弟子の横綱・照ノ富士から「お前は記録ではなくて記憶に残りたいんだろう。」と言われて出場することを決めた。
尊富士は次の日の記者会見で「スイッチが入って第二の自分がいるみたいに急に歩けるようになった。自分で自分が怖かった」と語り笑顔を見せた。
