広東省の山岳地帯にある深さ90mのボウル形の凹地は、天体衝突で形成されたクレーターであることを、同国の研究者チームが確認した。
花崗岩の山腹の岩盤に形成され保存された金林クレーターは直径900mで、過去1万2000年間で最大規模の天体衝突事象によるものだ。
このクレーターは7000年前に形成されたロシアのマチャ（Macha）クレーターを上回り、11700年前から現代まで続く完新世の中で知られている最大級の衝突クレーターとなった。
