日清戦争
日清戦争は、1894年7月から1895年4月にかけて日本と清国の間で行われた戦争です。
朝鮮半島の権益を巡る争いが原因となって引き起こされ、主に朝鮮半島と遼東半島および黄海で両国は交戦し、下関条約の調印によって終結しました。
日本も清も、東方進出をもくろみシベリア鉄道の建設を始めたロシアの脅威に対して、朝鮮半島に影響力を持ちたいと考えていました。
また当時日本は国内的には、政府批判が高まっていて政府は窮地に陥っていて、国内世論を外に向けたいと考えていました。
講和条約の中で日本は、清国から朝鮮の独立を承認させた他、台湾、澎湖諸島、遼東半島を割譲され、また巨額の賠償金も獲得しました。
しかし、直後の三国干渉により遼東半島は手放すことになりました。この戦争によって日本は、近代国家と認められて国際的地位が向上し、賠償金の大部分は軍備拡張費用となりました。
