米大学の研究チームが、シリアの古代都市遺跡で史上最古とみられるアルファベットを発見したと発表し、注目を集めている。
発表によると、「最古のアルファベット」は、シリア西部のテル・ウム・アル・マッラ遺跡の墓で見つかった粘土製の円筒形の物体に刻まれていて、紀元前2400年ごろのものと見られる。
アルファベットは紀元前1900年以降にエジプトで発明されたと考えられていたが、今回約500年も古く、異なる場所で見つかったため、アルファベットの起源に関する学説が塗り替えられそうだ。
