ネコがマタタビを好む行動がネコの身体に悪影響はないかなどを岩手大学と名古屋大学、そしてリバプール大学の研究チームが明らかにした。
宮崎教授達は10匹のネコにマタタビを与え、観察したところマタタビに依存性がないこと、またストレス反応や肝臓・腎臓への悪影響も見られない事がわかった。
「iSience（アイ・サイエンス）」に掲載され評価を受けた岩手大学の上野山さんは18歳のネコ、「レモン」を飼っていて、これで安心してマタタビを与えられると喜んでいた。
