利用者の減少の為、JR根室線の富良野駅と新得駅の区間が31日に廃止され、多くの住民や鉄道ファンが鉄路に別れを告げた。
区間の廃線に伴い、テレビドラマ「北の国から」のロケに使われ、ファンの間で“聖地”とされる布部駅も廃止される。
1999年公開された高倉健さん主演の映画「鉄道員」のロケで幌舞駅として使われた幾寅駅も廃止された。
