ウエスタンオーストラリアのアラン・ジェイミーソン教授の研究陣は伊豆小笠原海溝の海底８３３６メートルでスネイルフィッシュが泳ぐ場面をカメラに収めた。
またこれまでの捕獲記録は７７０３メートルだが、今回研究陣は初めて水深８０２２メートルで他の標本２匹を確保するのに成功した。
水深８０００メートルに達すると圧力は海水面の８００倍水準に達する。この魚のゼリー状の体や浮き袋がない点はこうした環境で生存するのに有利だ。
