パリパラリンピックのゴールボール男子決勝で、世界ランキング6位の日本は延長のすえ4対3で8位のウクライナに競り勝ち、この種目で初めてのメダルとなる金メダルを獲得した。
先に1点を取ったチームが勝利する延長で、日本は延長前半1分半過ぎ、佐野選手が力強いスローでゴールを決め、4対3でウクライナに競り勝って金メダルを獲得した。
キャプテンの金子選手は「準決勝で勝って『人生最高の日』と言ったが、きょう更新することができた。チームメートに感謝したい」と涙を流しながら話した。
