北海道内ではシカによる農作物などへの被害が深刻となっているが、このシカ対策に海の厄介者であるヒトデが注目されつつある。
根室市内の水産会社がヒトデをじっくり発酵させて計測不能な程の臭う液体を開発し、強臭力と名付け8月から販売を始めた。
食用で扱えず、ホタテなどを食べてしまう厄介物のヒトデ由来の液体の臭いは、シカだけでなく熊など他の動物を遠ざけるのにも効果を発揮するという。
