大学の研究チームが最新の年代測定を行った結果、アメリカ、オレゴン州の洞窟で、約1万2400年前に作られた、知られている中で「史上最古の縫製された衣服」の破片が発見された。
ヘラジカの皮を植物繊維で縫い合わせたこの遺物は、最終氷期を生き抜いた先住民が、高度な技術と独自の文化を持っていたことを裏付けている。
日本で言えば縄文時代初期に作られたこれらの服は、非常に細い針穴が開けられていて、当時の人々が高い技術で皮を仕立てていた証拠だ。
