熊本県苓北町にあるおよそ７４００万年前の地層から、国内で初めて大型のティラノサウルス科の下あごの化石が見つかった。
発見されたのは左右の下あごの骨で、長さが１４センチと１７センチで、全長が８から９メートルほどの大型の恐竜と推定される。
共同調査チームによればティラノサウルス科の化石は年代のわからないものが多く、生息していた年代や地域の広がりを知る重要な資料だという。
