「琵琶湖疏水施設」が国宝に、「太陽の塔」など8件が重要文化財にそれぞれ指定されることになった。
琵琶湖疎水施設は西洋の土木建築技術を取り入れようとして造られたもので、明治日本における都市基盤施設の金字塔とされている。
また、新たに重要文化財に指定される「太陽の塔」は1970年に開催された大阪万博のパビリオンとして芸術家岡本太郎さんのデザインで建設された。
