米カリフォルニア州の高校を卒業したばかりの１７歳の少年が、アラスカ州から南米アルゼンチンまで、527日かけて3万2000キロの道のりを自転車で走破した。
出発した時はほとんど金を持たず、１カ月約5万7000円の予算で切り抜けた彼は自転車旅行にそれほどお金はかからないと強調していた。
アメリカ大陸縦断は彼の視野をとても広げてくれたので、これまでの人生で一番的確な判断だったと思うと、19歳になったガーナーさんは力を込めた。
