こたつは、寒い冬に活躍する暖房器具です。
ヒーター付きのテーブルに布団を被せたような形で、中に足を入れて温まります。マンガやアニメなどによく描かれるため、海外でもよく知られています。
一方ヨーロッパはオイルヒーターが主流です。これは日本とヨーロッパの住居の構造や住習慣の違いからくるものです。
日本の伝統的な住宅は夏向きに通風を良くしているので部屋全体が温まりにくいです。また日本の部屋は基本的に靴を履かず地べたに座ります。なので炬燵のような局所的な暖房が日本ではよく使われます。
