先天性の重度難聴だったモロッコで生まれスペインに在住残っています少年が、米フィラデルフィア小児病院の遺伝子治療によって生まれて初めて音を聞いた。
病院の研究責任者を務めるジョン・ジャーミラー氏は、世界中で難聴に取り組むわれわれ医師や科学者が、20年以上目指してきた遺伝子治療がついに実現したと語った。
片耳の治療を受けて約4か月後、少年の難聴は軽・中等度にまで改善し、病院は、少年が文字通り生まれて初めて音を聞いていると表現している。
