1996年、考古学者のグループが中国北西部で北周の武帝の墓を発見し、散乱した骨とほぼ無傷の頭蓋骨を発掘した。
そして今回、頭蓋骨の輪郭と肢体から抽出したDNAを使って、中国の研究チームが1400年以上前の武帝の容姿を現代に蘇らせた。
分析の結果、武帝は黒髪、浅黒い肌で頬骨が突き出ているなど東アジアおよび北東アジアの典型的な顔の特徴を有していたと声明で述べられている。
