火星の地下の奥深い場所に大量の水が存在していることが、ＮＡＳＡのデータ解析で裏付けられたとする研究結果を、米カリフォルニア大学の研究チームが発表した
火星の地表には古代の湖や河川、水が流れた地形などの痕跡が残っていたが、３０億年以上前に大気が失われ、火星の湿潤期は終わった。
大気がなくなった後、火星の水がどうなったのかについては、消失したなど諸説あったが、今回の発見は火星の水が地殻に染み込んだことを示唆している。
