カナダ・オタワ大学（University of Ottawa）はこのほど、同国北東部ケベック州のヌナビク地域にて、地球上で確認されている中でも41億6000万年前という最古の岩石を発見したと発表した。
オタワ大学の地質学者クリスチャン・ソール氏を中心とする研究チームは、ウラン-鉛法とサマリウム-ネオジム法という2種類の放射年代測定法を同時に適用した。
この結果により、ヌヴヴアギトゥク・グリーンストーン帯は世界で唯一、地球の最初期の冥王代（約40〜46億年前）の岩石が確認された場所として認定された。
