彼らは「無宿人」と呼ばれる飢饉や犯罪で戸籍を無くした人たちで、江戸や地方から佐渡に送られ,、労働に従事し一生を終えている。
参加者は「相川の町をこれまで支えてくれたのは無宿人たちのおかげ」と読経をして先人の冥福を祈った。
