江戸時代に佐渡金山で坑内から地下水をくみ上げる過酷な作業にあたり亡くなった労働者の供養祭が佐渡市で行われた。

彼らは「無宿人」と呼ばれる飢饉や犯罪で戸籍を無くした人たちで、江戸や地方から佐渡に送られ,、労働に従事し一生を終えている。

参加者は「相川の町をこれまで支えてくれたのは無宿人たちのおかげ」と読経をして先人の冥福を祈った。
