大晦日は一年の最後の日です。
日本では古来、お正月には新年の神様である年神様がやってくるとされ、年神様をお迎えするために様々な行事が形成されていきました。
そのため、大晦日は寝ずに年神様を待つという習わしがあります。
大晦日の夜から年明けまでお寺で鐘を108回鳴らします。108は仏教で人間の持つ煩悩の数だといわれています。
大晦日の夜の入浴は1年の汚れと共に厄落としをするという意味が込められています。元旦にせっかく授かった福を洗い流してしまわないようにという理由から、元旦の日の出ている間は入浴を避けた方が良いといわれています。
