南米で野生のトマトとジャガイモに似た植物が交雑した結果、約900万年前に現代のジャガイモが誕生したという研究結果が、科学学術雑誌に発表された。
現代のジャガイモは、チリ原産のエツべローサム（Etuberosum）と呼ばれる3種の植物によく似ているが、これらの植物は塊茎（かいけい、ジャガイモやヤムイモに見られるような、栄養素を蓄え、私たちが食べる部分）を形成しない。
ゲノム分析の結果、おそらく昆虫による受粉が原因で現代のジャガイモは約60%がエツベローサム、40%がトマトと二つの祖先種からバランスの取れた遺伝的遺産を受け継いでいることが明らかになった。
