着物
着物とは元々は日本人が現代でいう和服を指した言葉です。
和服という言葉は明治時代に洋服が入ってきたので、これと区別するために作られた用語です。これらと似た言葉に呉服というものがあります。これは昔は絹製の着物を指しましたが、今では着物と同じ意味で使われています。
元々は弥生時代までさかのぼることができる着物は、今では海外でも「kimono」として知られています。
洋服はファスナーやボタンを用いて複雑なシルエットを作り出しますが、着物は基本的に帯のみで留めていきます。一反の布を織り込んで縫い合わせる着物は、女性用も男性用も用いられる布のサイズが同じです。サイズが違う人が着ることになっても仕立て直すことが可能であるため、一つの着物を代々受け継いで行くことも可能です。
外国の方も浴衣などで着物を着る機会があると思います。着る時に注意してほしいことは、着物を着用するときには「右前」、つまり「自分から見て左衿が上」になることです。反対に着るのは死者の着方なので縁起が悪くマナー違反だと思われるかもしれません。
