大阪公立大などの研究チームは米ユタ州の実験場で、2008年の実験開始以降、最も強い宇宙線を観測し、アマテラス粒子と命名した。
1991年に観測されたオーマイゴッド粒子の320エクサ電子ボルトに次ぐ高エネルギーで、雷2.4兆回分にあたるエネルギーが込められている計算になる。
宇宙線は宇宙空間の高エネルギーの放射線で、爆発やブラックホールなどが発生源と考えられ、宇宙の数々の現象を解き明かすカギと言われている。
