NASAはテキサス州のジョンソン宇宙センターにある火星を模した1700平方フィート（158平方メートル）の居住空間「マーズ・デューン・アルファ」で生活する4人を募集している。
火星の状態を正確に再現した空間で参加者はスペースウォークを体験するほか、健康をチェックされ、孤立生活への忍耐力が求められる。
NASAによると、ボランティアには同空間で目覚めてアクティビティをする間は1時間10ドルが支払われ、滞在期間1年で合計6万ドルほどの報酬が見込めるという。
