畳
畳は日本の伝統的な床材です。
畳はもともとは平安時代の貴族の屋敷で板の間の上に敷く敷物として用いられており、身分や富の象徴でした。畳が一般化したのは江戸時代のことで、部屋に敷き詰める現在と同じ形で庶民の間にも広まりました。
畳には縦横比が2:1になっている長方形の一畳サイズと、これを横半分にした正方形の半畳サイズの2種類があります。一畳の大きさは約0.9メートル×約1.8メートルで、日本の部屋の大きさの単位にもなっています。
イグサを使った畳という床材は、日本の風土に合った固有の文化です。ソファやベッドを用いる西洋の生活スタイルが浸透してもなお、畳がなくならないのは、日本人にとって畳の心地良さが特別なものといえるからでしょう。
畳は高い断熱性と保温性、優れた吸湿能力と調湿機能、吸音・遮音効果があります。また畳は適度な弾力で座り心地が良く、自然の優しい色・匂いでリラックス効果があります。
最近は外国にも畳は輸出されています。ごろ寝をしたり、瞑想をしたりするために、畳を何枚かご自宅においてはどうでしょう。
