南アメリカ原産のパラグアイオニバスの葉は、葉の裏側の葉脈と葉脈の網目の間にも空気がたまり、大きな浮力がある。
オオオニバスの葉は直径１．２メートルもあり、例年よりも２０センチほど小さいが、富山県中央植物園では体重３０キロ以下の子どもが乗ることができる。
