カリフォルニア大学等の研究チームはレーザー技術を用いて、「自然界の光では体験できない色」を知覚させることに成功し、その色は「olo（オロ）」と名付けられた。
私たちの目は、赤（L錐体）、緑（M錐体）、青（S錐体）と呼ばれる三種類の色感受性細胞＝錐体によって色を認識しているが研究チームはM錐体のみを刺激することを目指した。
実験では、5人の被験者全員が共通して「青緑のような色だ」と報告したものの、その印象はただの青緑色でなくこれまでにない強烈な彩度だったという。
