北海道鹿追町と愛別町で見つかった紫外線をあてると色鮮やかに光り出す新種の鉱物が、北海道石と命名された。
6000種類の鉱物の中で、99％は実は無機鉱物で、この石は残りの１％に当たる有機鉱物なので、かなり珍しいものだと大阪大学の研究員は語った。
石油の生成に関連するかも知れない北海道石の展示が、29日から鹿追町で始まり、輝きを見ようと多くの人が会場に訪れた。
